In the 9th century, the Cholas emerged as the dominant power in Tamil Nadu. Under the leadership of Raja Raja Chola I and his son Rajendra Chola I, the Chola empire expanded to cover much of South India and Southeast Asia. The Cholas were great builders and patrons of the arts, and they left behind a legacy of magnificent temples and other monuments.

The Chola empire declined in the 13th century, and it was replaced by the Pandyas. The Pandyas ruled for over two centuries, and they were also known for their military prowess and their cultural achievements.

In the 16th century, the Vijayanagara Empire conquered Tamil Nadu. The Vijayanagara Empire was a powerful Hindu empire that ruled much of South India for over two centuries. The Vijayanagara rulers were great patrons of the arts and architecture, and they left behind a legacy of magnificent temples and other monuments.

The Vijayanagara Empire declined in the 17th century, and it was replaced by a number of smaller kingdoms. In the 18th century, the British East India Company began to establish trading posts in Tamil Nadu. The British gradually gained control of the region, and they ruled Tamil Nadu as part of the Madras Presidency until India gained independence in 1947.

After independence, Tamil Nadu became a state of the Republic of India. Tamil Nadu is a prosperous state with a rich culture and history.
